DMAE

DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) is a naturally occurring substance that helps in the synthesis of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. The acetylcholine, a product of synthesis of choline, is involved in many processes such as the brain power of learning, memory recall and store. Some studies have shown that taking supplements of DMAE may help to enhance the levels of choline in the brain, therefore, increases the ability of the body to produce acetylcholine thus leading to increased capacity and power of memory.

DMAE is found in high levels in sardines and anchovies, but in small quantities are also produced in the human brain.

Integrations of DMAE have been prescribed for years as treatments for cognitive disorders. A form of DMAE was already prescribed in the 60s and 70s to treat behavioral and learning problems associated with a reduced capacity of attention.

Recently, DMAE has become a popular ingredient in skin firming and was advertised as a facelift in a jar.

With aging, muscle fibers under the skin tend to lengthen and relax. The skin affloscia and becomes thinner.

Recent studies on a gel formulation containing DMAE have shown that the compound can increase the consistency of the skin, even in younger individuals. Thirty individuals aged between 36 and 49 years were subjected to a test that measured the changes in the tension of the skin after application of the gel containing DMAE and the results were compared with a placebo. The results indicated that the placebo had only a slight or no effect on the texture of the skin, while the skins were treated with DMAE more sodas.

It is not yet clear the mechanism of action of DMAE. According to a hypothesis, the DMAE would increase the consistency of the skin by stimulating muscle contraction. The acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter responsible for sending messages between nerve cells and muscles. Increasing levels of DMAE could increase the level of acetylcholine and lead to increased muscle contraction. Another possible mechanism of action that has been suggested concerning the possible action to improve water retention in connective tissue of the skin that lead to increased tension of the surface of the skin.

Even the stains of age seem to respond effectively to DMAE. When the brown pigment cell, the lipofuscina begins to accumulate in cells, age spots appear. Some studies have shown that the membrane stabilizing properties of DMAE reduces the accumulation of deposits within cells lipofuscina cleaning the excess skin cells from patients.

DMAE has also shown antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Antioxidants are a category of ingredients that protect the cell structures from free radical damage, slowing the aging process and preventing the formation of expression lines and wrinkles. The anti-inflammatory agents calm the skin rather, keeping it healthy and radiant.
